We wanted to try something different. A lot of us were bored with the popsicle shapes, and if you don’t skate switch- why ride one? We just wanted to try a fun shape with the sizing and functionality of present day skateboarding.

We make skate products with all ages of skateboarders in mind. When the first Funshapes were sampled, we had a 14.25″ wheelbase on it. A few of our older skaters loved these new shapes, but asked about having a larger wheelbase. So we decided to have the double truck holes to stoke everyone out. All the Funshapes come with a 14.25″ and 15″ wheelbase.

Features:

  • Width : 8.4″
  • Length : 31.5″

About the Cab Ban This Dragon Artwork:

In 1988 Powell-Peralta ran an “Artist Wanted” advertisement in TWS and Thrasher. The contest “winner” would get a job in the Powell-Peralta art department in Santa Barbara. The artist selected was Sean Cliver, mainly because his illustration style closely resembled VCJ’s. Cliver’s first deck design, the Barbee Ragdoll, was a departure from the traditional VCJ look, but when it came time to update the Caballero dragon, Sean emulated the master. At some point later, someone dubbed the graphic Cab “Ban This” Dragon since it was prominently featured in that video (think slow-motion sequence).

9.82″ Powell Peralta Bucky Lasek Stadium
9.82″ Powell Peralta Bucky Lasek Stadium

An east coast skateboarding wonder at a young age—there’s a story out there that Bucky started skateboarding after his bicycle was stolen, sure, but really there was a shop owner in Baltimore named Andy who liked Bucky, flowed him product, and generally made skateboarding affordable for him. He entered amateur contests and did well. His profile rose to a point where in 1989 Tony Hawk sent him a game changing invite to visit him in SoCal.

The 1990 release of what has become known as Bucky’s STADIUM model was one of the graphics designed entirely by Sean Cliver during his three years at Powell Peralta. The back-story behind the unusual baseball-themed graphic has little to do with Bucky’s interest in, or his ability to actually play baseball.

Not only was Bucky known for being a nice, likable guy, Sean also knew he was from Baltimore. At the time the Baltimore Orioles had gone through a resurgence because their new stadium (Camden Yards) was being constructed while Cal Ripken, Jr., was surging in his effort to play more baseball games consecutively (2632 eventually) than any human thought possible. Sean saw this as an opportunity for Bucky Lasek, the nice guy that people liked, to have a board graphic with lots of those people he liked on his board. BOOM!

-Nostalgic notes from the eidetic memory of Jim Fitzpatrick

Santa Barbara local Frankie Hill was known for his “go for it” attitude, especially when filming videos. He was featured in Public Domain, but Ban This features his breakout part, one minute and 38 seconds of what many today consider proof of Hill’s pioneering stunt work at big rails and huge gaps. After Ban This, Hill received bags of fan mail asking when he’s going to turn pro.

The timing was good, too, as a spot opened up with Mike Vallely’s departure. Hill started riding Vallely’s shape, modified with a bigger nose, and on a vacation with Hastings, he poached a bulldog logo from an Amsterdam coffee shop and made it his first pro graphic.

It was illustrated by Sean Cliver in 1990.

Discovered at a Virginia Beach contest by Neil Blender and Lance, a young Mike Vallely was asked to join the Powell-Peralta team and quickly rose to fame as a premier street skater. After initially rejecting the Roach graphic, Vallely worked closely with VCJ on an elephant theme. Mike and his elephant deck were both very popular.
